University of North Alabama - Athletic Department Goals

The goals of the UNA Intercollegiate Athletic program are parallel to those of the University, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Gulf South Conference – to promote academic and athletic achievement and sportsmanship within the framework of a winning tradition.

Since colleges and universities exist to educate youth, the true justification for the existence of intercollegiate athletics is that they contribute to the overall education program. It is imperative therefore, that this program encompasses the intellectual, physical, social, moral, emotional, cultural and vocational aspects of individual development.

The goals of Lion Athletics are:
   
Reference University Goals  

(1, 2, 3)

1. Student-athletes will graduate at a rate equal to or better than the student population as a whole through selective recruitment and the provision of an environment conducive to academic success.
(4) 2. Student-athletes, both men and women, will receive equitable athletic participation opportunities.
(6) 3. Student-athletes’ health and well-being will be protected through proper training procedures and treatment along with adequate insurance coverage.
(5) 4. Compliance with all Gulf South Conference and NCAA rules and regulations by student-athletes, coaches and others will be emphasized.
(6, 11) 5. Student-athlete sportsmanship, along with that of the coaches, staff and fans, will be emphasized during all athletic contests.
(5, 6, 11) 6. Student-athletes and their teams will successfully compete in the Gulf South Conference and the NCAA Division II.
(9, 10) 7. To recruit and retain coaches and staff members who demonstrate competence and achievement in their area of expertise.
(5, 11) 8. To increase external support for the athletic program and student-athletes so as to help offset operational costs and enhance competitive success.
(6, 11) 9. To increase attendance at athletic contests involving student-athletes through a marketing and promotions program.
