-- The University of North Alabama baseball
team placed five players on the 2007
All-Gulf South Conference Baseball Team, as
selected by the league's head coaches.
Second baseman A.J. Reed, shortstop Matt
Horton, outfielder Josh Phillips and
pitchers Richard Brindle and Jeff Schafer
earned first-team All-GSC honors. Outfielder
Trey Pollard was selected second-team All-GSC.
Reed and
Phillips were first-team All-GSC for the
second straight year, and Phillips was a
unanimous selection. A senior from London,
Ontario, Canada, Reed hit ..277 this season
(36-of-166) with 30 runs scored and 32 runa
batted in. He led the Lions in drawing walks
with 34.
A senior from
Cullman, Phillips hit .389 and led the Lions
in runs scored (70), hits (81), doubles
(17), triples (6), total bases (116) and
stolen bases (34).
Horton, a
junior from Cleveland, Ala., started all
season at shortstop for the Lions and hit
.358 with 38 runs scored and 38 RBI.
Brindle, a
senior from Peru, Ind., was a two-year
starter at UNA and won 17 games in just two
seasons. He was 8-3 in 2007 with a 4.33
earned run average and 85 strikeouts in 87.1
innings pitched.
Schafer, a
junior from Hamilton, Miss., went 8-4 this
season for UNA with a 3.94 ERA and 68
striekouts in 93.2 innings on the mound.
Pollard, a
sophomore from Mobile, hit .333 this season
with 32 runs scored and 29 runs batted in.
UNA finished the 2007 season at 32-21-1 for
its 24th consecutive winning season.
