-- Jarrett Shepherd had three hits and
Richard Brindle pitched five strong innings
as the University of North Alabama won its
2007 baseball season-opener 4-2 over
Arkansas Tech at University Field.
Arkansas Tech
took the lead with a run in the third inning
but UNA used a three-run bottom of the third
to take the lead for good. The Lions
extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the
fourth but Tech closed the gap 4-2 with a
run over Brindle in the top of the sixth.
Relievers Frank Dougherty and Jeff Schafer
pitched two scoreless innings each as the
Lions held on for the win.
Arkansas Tech
got a run in the third after Josh Holloway
was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored
on a single by Tony Sanchez.
UNA answered in the bottom of the inning as
Matt Horton was hit by a pitch, A.J. Reed
singled and Josh Graham had a sacrifice fly
to score Horton. Trey Pollard then walked
and Shepherd followed with an RBI single to
make it 2-1. An error by the ATU right
fielder then allowed Pollard to score to
make it 3-1.
Josh Phillips
walked with one out in the fourth, stole a
base and then scored on an error to extend
the lead to 4-1.
Tech's final
run came on back-to-back doubles by Sanchez
and Black in the sixth.
UNA finished
with four runs on four hits and no errors.
Arkansas Tech had two runs on nine hits but
the Wonder Boys commited five errors.
Brindle (1-0)
allowed two runs on six hits over five
innings and recorded seven strikeouts.
The two schools
meet in a double-header on Sunday at noon at
University Field.
