-- Daniel Johnson delivered two clutch hits
and Frank Dougherty pitched three scoreless
innings of relief as North Alabama rallied
for an 8-3 win Sunday in the second game of
a double- header against Arkansas Tech.
UNA dropped the
opener 11-9, scoring two runs in the bottom
of the seventh but unable to make up the
difference. The Lions are now 2-1 overall
after the three-game series. In the
opener, UNA starter Derrick Simpson was
roughed up for five hits and four runs in
his first start for the Lions in just 1 1/3
innings. Reliever Justin Walters then gave
up four hits and walked two in 3 2/3 innings
as UNA fell behind 7-1. But the Lions
rallied with a six-run fifth inning, on just
two hits, to tie the game at 7-7.
Eli Fuller came
on to try and hold the Wonder Boys in check
but surrendered a three-run homer to Tech's
David Gaines in the sixth and allowed
another run in the seventh. UNA got
two runs in the seventh on RBI groundouts by
Caleb Kidd and Ross Parker, but ATU reliever
Josh Floriani struckout the Lions Jarrett
Shepherd with Josh Phillips on second to end
the game.
Fuller (0-1)
took the loss while Floriani (1-0), the
third pitcher for ATU, got the win in 2.2
innings of work. UNA scored nine runs
on six hits, while Tech played 11 runs on 14
hits. Phillips, Kidd and Parker had two hits
each for UNA in a losing effort.
In the second
game, UNA freshman starter Jordan West
walked three batters and surrendered three
runs in the first inning. He recovered,
however, to allow just one hit in four
innings of work. The Lions got two runs back
in the bottom of the first and the used a
five-run fifth inning to secure the win.
In the fifth,
the Lions combined five hits an error and a
walk to push five runs across. Daniel
Johnson singled xith the bases loaded to
score Shepherd with the tying run. A
sacrifice fly by Matt Horton scored A.J.
Reed with the go-ahead run and Caleb Kidd
and Ross Parker added RBI singles.
UNA added an
insurance run in the sixth when Shepherd
walked and later scored on an RBI triple by
Johnson. Dougherty allowed just one
walk in three innings of relief to get his
first win of the season. Phillips led the
Lions with a 3-for-4 performance, while
Johnson and Parker had two hits each.
UNA scored eight runs on 12 hits and
commited one error, while Tech had three
runs on just one hit and made one error.
