FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama baseball
team ripped 22 hits, played solid defense
and got strong pitching performances from
both its starters and relievers as the Lions
swept a double-header from Henderson State,
5-2 and 8-2.
The Lions got
nine hits in the opener and Jeff Schafer
(4-0) pitched 7 2/3 innings before Pat
Allison came on to record the final four
outs. UNA then got 13 hits in the nightcap
to back the pitching of Richard Brindle
(5-0). With the sweep, UNA is now 15-7-1
overall, while Henderson State falls to
8-15. UNA got a run in the first inning of
the opener but Henderson State tied the game
with a run in the third.
The Reddies
took the lead with a run in the third and
UNA got a run in the sixth to make it 2-2.
The Lions then got three runs in the seventh
for a 5-2 lead and Allison stopped the final
HSU threat after the Reddies had scored a
run in the seventh. Trey Pollard and Ross
Parker had two hits each for UNA in the
opener and Pollard drove in two runs.
Schafer allowed
two runs on five hits and struckout three.
Josh Fleming (2-5) took the loss for
Henderson. In the nightcap, UNA got a run in
the first and three in the third for a 4-0
lead. The Reddies got a run in the fourth
and another in the sixth to cut the Lions'
margin to 4-2, but UNA got for runs in the
sixth to put the game away.
Josh Graham was
3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three
runs batted in. Josh Phillips was 3-for-3
with three runs scored and Matt Horton was
2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
A.J. Reed also drove in two runs. Brindle
pitched six innings, allowing seven hits,
walking two and striking out seven. Nick
Newberry made his first pitching appearance
of the season in the seventh and retired all
three batters that he faced. The Lions and
Reddies will meet again Sunday in a single
game at 1 p.m. at University Field.
