CARROLLTON, Ga.
-- The University of North Alabama baseball
team let a chance for a sweep in its opening
Gulf South Conference double-header slip
through its hands Saturday and the Lions
settled for a split with the West Georgia
Wolves. UNA won the opener 13-8 and led led
the nightcap 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth
before surrendering two runs.
UNA is now
17-9-1 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South
Conference. West Georgia is 17-8 and 1-1.
Trey Pollard
and Jarret Shepherd led a 15-hit attack in
the opener with three hits each.
Pollard was
3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs
batted in. Six Lions had two hits or more.
Jeff Schafer
(5-0) got the win for UNA, allowing four
hits and two runs in five and 1/3 innings.
Brandon Foster allowed two runs on three
hits in 2 1/3 innings and Pat Allison
allowed two runs in just 1/3 iinning. Nick
Newberry pitched a scoreless ninth.
UNA got four
runs in the first, four im the third and one
in the sixth for a 9-0 lead. The Wolves got
two runs in the bottom of the sixth and UNA
added a run in the eighth for a 10-2
advantage. West Georgia then scored six runs
in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap
to 10-8. UNA added three insurance runs in
the ninth.
In the second
game, UNA got two runs in the first and the
Wolves tied it with two in the fourth. UNA
regained the lead with a run in the fifth
and that lead held up until West Georgia
talied two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Richard Brindle
(5-1) took the loss, pitching a complete
game. He allowed four runs on just four hits
and struckout four. Newberry and Josh
Phillips led UNA with two hits each.
The Lions and
Wolves will play the final game of the
series on Sunday at noon.
