FLORENCE
-- Wednesday was a day the University of
North Alabama baseball team would just as
soon forget as
the Lions came out on the short end of a
16-3 contest with Columbus State. The Lions
allowed 19 hits, had only seven hits of
their own and committed six errors in the
loss. UNA drops to 18-10-1 with the loss and
the Couhars improved to 24-7. Columbus State
batted around in each of the first two
innings off Lion pitchers Jeff Schafer and
Richard Brindle but the Cougars only led 6-0
after also leaving the bases loaded in both
innings. After Columbus got two more runs in
the third for an 8-0 lead, UNA finally got
on the board with a run in the bottom of the
third on a double by Jarrett Shepherd and an
RBI single by Matt Horton.
The Cougars got
four more runs in the fourth to make it 12-1
and three in the fifth for a 15-1 lead.
Columbus final run came in the seventh
inning and UNA got two in the bottom of the
seventh. Schafer (5-1) took the loss,
allowing six runs on six hits in just one
inning of work. Brindle allowed two runs
over 1 1/3 innings and Brandon Foster gave
up six runs on seven hits, including three
home runs, in 1 2/3 innings.
Justin Walter
allowed one run on three hits in his two
innings and Pat Allison allowed a run on one
hit in one
inning. Nick Newberry was the only Lion with
two hits in the game.
