FLORENCE
-- The North Alabama baseball team struggled
at the plate all day as the Lions dropped a
Gulf South Conference double-header to West
Florida at University Field, 3-1 and 10-3.
With the losses, UNA drops to 18-12-1
overall and 2-3 in the GSC. West Florida
improved to 24-9 and 3-2.
Despite a
strong pitching performance from Jeff
Schafer in the opener, the Lions came out on
the short end of a 3-1 score. All of West
Florida's runs came by the long-ball as Bo
Williams hit a two-run homer in the third
inning and Lee Huggins had a solo shot in
the ninth. UNA's only run came in the third
on a single by Nick Newberry and an RBI
double from Josh Phillips.
In the second
game, West Florida took a 5-0 lead before
UNA managed two runs in the fourth inning.
The Argonauts then added five more runs over
the final three innings and the Lions
couldn't catch up. UNA was outhit 13-4 and
each team made three errors. Daniel Johnson
was the only Lion with two hits in the game.
Pat Allison
(1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on
four hits over three innings.
