LIONS SPLIT WITH MONTEVALLO

-- Daniel Johnson ripped a two-out, two-run
single to right in the bottom of the sixth
inning to lift North Alabama to an 8-7 win
over Montevallo and earn a split in a
double-header with the Falcons.
Montevallo won
the opening game 14-4.
With the split,
UNA Is 21-14-1 overall and 4-4 in the Gulf
South Conference. Montevallo is 27-11 and
4-4.
Montevallo held
a 7-6 lead entering the bottom of the sixth
of the nightcap but Nick Newberry singled
for the Lions and Josh Phillips doubled with
one out. Matt Horton was intentionally
walked to load the bases and A.J. Reed
popped out. Johnson then singled to lift UNA
to the 8-7 win. Newberry (1-0) got his first
win of the season, pitching two innings in
relief of Richard Brindle. UNA outhit the
Falcons 11-9 in the game, with Phillips
leading the way with three. Johnson and Josh
Graham had two hits each. Zach Andrews took
the loss for Montevallo.
In the opener,
UNA and Montevallo were tied 3-3 after four
innings before the Falcons added 11 runs
over the last three innings. Jeff Schafer
(5-3) took the loss for UNA in five innings
of work.
Ross Parker led
UNA with three hits.
