FLORENCE
-- A grandslam by Josh Graham and clutch
relief pitching from Nick Newberry helped
lead the North Alabama baseball team to a
series win over Montevallo with a 12-6
victory Sunday at University Field.
UNA went 2-1
against the 24th ranked Falcons and won its
Gulf South Conference series against
Montevallo for the 11th time in 12 seasons.
Montevallo has never recorded a series win
over UNA in Florence, and in fact had not
won a single game in Florence since 1999
before a 14-4 win in the series opener
Saturday.
In Sunday's
game, UNA jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the
fourth inning but Montevallo quickly cut the
lead to 4-3 in the top of the fifth. UNA
added a run in the bottom of the fifth and
got five more in the sixth, partly due to
Graham's grandslam. It was his sixth home
run of the season. Montevallo again rallied
with three runs in the seventh but Newberry,
the fourth Lion pitcher of the day, shutdown
the Falcons over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Newberry
allowed no runs on three hits and walked
one. Pat Allison (2-2) got the win,
allowing three runs on three hits over 2 1/3
innings. Justin Walters started the game but
left in the top of the fifth. He allowed two
runs on four hits and struckout two.
Justin Fleming
then faced two batters before Allison came
on. Graham was 2-for-4 with two runs
scored and four RBI.Caleb Kidd, Trey Pollard
and Daniel Johnson also had two hits each
for UNA. Montevallo's Nate Russ (3-2) took
the loss.
UNA is now
22-14-1 overall and moved into third place
in the GSC race with a 5-4 league record.
Montevallo falls to 27-12 and 4-5.
