FLORENCE -- North Alabama sent the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn't complete a comeback attempt Sunday as West Alabama escaped University Field with a 9-6 victory over the Lions.

UNA trailed 9-3 entering the ninth but managed to push three runs across and had runners at first and second when Matt Horton grounded out to third to end the game.

The loss drops UNA to 30-19-1 overall and 6-9 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama is 34-14 and 11-4.

West Alabama got a run in the first but UNA took the lead with a three-run second inning.

A two-run homer by Josh Graham led that effort. West Alabama came back with four runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead and added one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth for a 9-3 lead.

In the ninth, Trey Pollard led off for UNA with a single and moved to second when A.J. Reed was hit by a pitch. Nick Newberry drove in a run with a groundout and Ross Parker struckout. Caleb Kidd came up with a two-out, RBI single, and Graham followed with a single. Josh Phillips RBI single scored Kidd to make it 9-6.

UWA's Brent Talano finally recorded the last out but he allowed three runs on four hits in just one inning of work. Charles Kelley (2-1), the second of four Tiger pitchers in the game, got the win. UNA's Justin Walters (6-4) took the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits in two innings.

West Alabama out-hit UNA 13-12 and the Lions made four errors.
