FLORENCE
-- North Alabama sent the potential tying
run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth
inning but couldn't complete a comeback
attempt Sunday as West Alabama escaped
University Field with a 9-6 victory over the
Lions.
UNA trailed 9-3
entering the ninth but managed to push three
runs across and had runners at first and
second when Matt Horton grounded out to
third to end the game.
The loss drops
UNA to 30-19-1 overall and 6-9 in the Gulf
South Conference. West Alabama is 34-14 and
11-4.
West Alabama
got a run in the first but UNA took the lead
with a three-run second inning.
A two-run homer
by Josh Graham led that effort. West Alabama
came back with four runs in the third to
take a 5-3 lead and added one in the fourth,
two in the sixth and one in the eighth for a
9-3 lead.
In the ninth,
Trey Pollard led off for UNA with a single
and moved to second when A.J. Reed was hit
by a pitch. Nick Newberry drove in a run
with a groundout and Ross Parker struckout.
Caleb Kidd came up with a two-out, RBI
single, and Graham followed with a single.
Josh Phillips RBI single scored Kidd to make
it 9-6.
UWA's Brent
Talano finally recorded the last out but he
allowed three runs on four hits in just one
inning of work. Charles Kelley (2-1), the
second of four Tiger pitchers in the game,
got the win. UNA's Justin Walters (6-4) took
the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits
in two innings.
West Alabama
out-hit UNA 13-12 and the Lions made four
errors.
