FLORENCE – University of North Alabama head baseball coach Mike Lane has announced the early signing of five players for the 2008-09 recruiting  class. Three transfers and two high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to play for the Lions.

Mitch Handley, Chase Porch and Jordan Wakefield have each chosen to extend their athletic careers from the community college level. Handley, a Grain Valley, Mo., native, is a right-handed pitcher for Kansas City (Kan.) Community College. He helped the Blue Devils to 38-20 record in 2007.

Porch is a right-handed pitcher from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Blue Springs, Miss. The Blue Springs, Miss., native played his freshman season at Meridian Community College, where he posted a 4-2 record with 31 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched.

Wakefield rounds out the list of transfers, coming to UNA from Southwest Tennessee Community College in Collierville, Tenn. The catcher from Collierville saw playing time as a true freshman for the Saluqis in 2007.

Andrew Almon and Zachary Summy are two local prep standouts who will enter the UNA program as true freshmen. Almon, a shortstop from Shoals Christian School,  hit .418 as a junior. He also had 8 homeruns, 39 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Summy tallied 10 RBI and scored 14 runs with a .258 batting average for the Class 6A Florence Falcons.
