FLORENCE
– University of North Alabama head baseball
coach Mike Lane has announced the early
signing of five players for the 2008-09
recruiting class. Three transfers and two
high school seniors have signed national
letters of intent to play for the Lions.
Mitch Handley,
Chase Porch and Jordan Wakefield have each
chosen to extend their athletic careers from
the community college level. Handley, a
Grain Valley, Mo., native, is a right-handed
pitcher for Kansas City (Kan.) Community
College. He helped the Blue Devils to 38-20
record in 2007.
Porch is a
right-handed pitcher from Northeast
Mississippi Community College in Blue
Springs, Miss. The Blue Springs, Miss.,
native played his freshman season at
Meridian Community College, where he posted
a 4-2 record with 31 strikeouts in 32.1
innings pitched.
Wakefield
rounds out the list of transfers, coming to
UNA from Southwest Tennessee Community
College in Collierville, Tenn. The catcher
from Collierville saw playing time as a true
freshman for the Saluqis in 2007.
Andrew Almon
and Zachary Summy are two local prep
standouts who will enter the UNA program as
true freshmen. Almon, a shortstop from
Shoals Christian School, hit .418 as a
junior. He also had 8 homeruns, 39 RBI and
16 stolen bases. Summy tallied 10 RBI and
scored 14 runs with a .258 batting average
for the Class 6A Florence Falcons.
