FLORENCE -- Sophomore Jordan West of Florence pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief and struckout 10 batters to lead the University of North Alabama to an 8-6 win over Kentucky Wesleyan in the second game of a double-header Sunday at University Field. The Panthers rallied from a two-run deficit in the seventh inning to tie the opener and then scored a run in the eighth inning for a 6-5 win. The split gives UNA a 3-1 series win over Kentucky Wesleyan and puts the Lions at 9-2 overall. The Panthers fall to 1-6.

West, who was 0-1 as a freshman in 2007, got his first win as a Lion by overpowering the Panther hitters.

UNA led 4-1 after the first inning but a Panther rally in the second tied the game and Lion starter Brennen Auerbach was pulled for West. West struckout the side in the third and sixth innings and struckout 10 of the 22 batters he faced. He allowed two runs on five hits and didn't walk any batters in his five-plus innings of work. UNA got its margin of victory in the fourth inning when Cole Mitchell reached on an error and Jeffery Ritter hammered a pitch over a billboard in leftfield for a two-run homer. UNA out-hit the Panthers 9-7 in the game.

In the opener, KWC got a run in the third but UNA answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth but UNA scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-3 lead. UNA started Todd Bryan pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Ryan Mitchell came on to record the final out in the sixth and freshman Trey Mitchell was brought on to close the game in the seventh. After recording one out, Mitchell gave up back-to-back singles. With two away, KWC's Timmy Wimsatt blooped a single into left to tie the game. The Panthers then got a run in the eighth and Wesleyan's Nick Crady came on in relief and pitched a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Mitchell (0-1) took the loss for UNA. Ritter and Trey Pollard led UNA with two hits each in the game.
