-- The University of North Alabama baseball
team got two strong pitching performances
Saturday but was only able to score two runs
in two games as the Lions split a
double-header with Catawba.
The Indians,
who lead the South Atlantic Conference, took
the opener 2-0. UNA rebounded for a 2-0 win
of its own in the nightcap.
With the split,
UNA is now 20-14 overall and Catawba is
28-13.
Catawba scored
a run in the first inning and added another
in the fourth to lead 2-0. The Lions got two
runners on in the third but couldn't score
and hit into and inning ending double play
in the sixth.
In the seventh,
Cole Mitchell got a leadoff single and stole
second. Trey Pollard then singled and also
stole second. After a strikeout and a
groundout failed to push a runner across,
pinch hitter Ross Parker grounded to short
and was called out on a close play at first.
Branden Tepe
(3-5) took the tough loss for UNA, allowing
just six hits. Jeffery Ritter led UNA at the
plate with two hits.
Justin Fleming
(1-0) pitched five shutout innings in the
nightcap, allowing just two infield hits.
Ryan Miller got his second save of the
season as he pitched two scoreless innings
and struckout five batters.
UNA got a run
in the first inning when Collin Murphy
singled and went to second on an error. He
later scored on an RBI single by Josh
Graham. Nick Newberry singled in Graham in
the fourth with an insurance run.
Catawba
finished with just three hits in support of
starter Alex Fairweather (5-2).
