FLORENCE
-- A seventh inning rally fell one
run short in the opener but the University
of North Alabama scored four runs in its
final at bat of the nightcap to earn a split
with No. 21 ranked Ouachita Baptist.
The Tigers,
36-8, won the opener 8-7 when when UNA left
the bases loaded in the bottom of the
seventh.
The Lions then
scored four runs in their final at bat of
game two to overcome a 6-3 deficit and pick
up a 7-6 win.
After dropping
the opener, UNA fell behind 2-0 in the
second game but rallied to tie it in the
fourth on a two- run homer by Josh Graham.
The Tigers got three runs off Lion reliever
Trey Mitchell in the sixth for a 5-2 lead
and UNA made it 5-3 in the bottom of the
sixth on a solo homer by Collin Murphy. In
the bottom of the seventh, down 6-3, UNA
scored four runs on three hits, an error, a
walk and a wild pitch.
Cole Mitchell
got a leadoff single and Ross Parker walked.
Matt Horton delivered an RBI single off
Tiger closer Patrick Lemmond to make it 6-4.
Kyle Jones sacrificed in Parker and reached
on an error by the pitcher, making it 6-5. A
bunt RBI single by Qualon Millender tied the
game at 6-6. After Pollard was intentionally
walked to load the bases, Pinch-runner
Jarrett Shepherd then scored the winning run
on a wild pitch. Miller got the win,
allowing one hit and no runs in 2/3 of an
inning.
Murphy and
Daniel Johnson homered for UNA in the opener
and the led 6-5 after six innings. Closer
Ryan Miller then came on but couldn't hold
the lead as he allowed three runs on two
hits and walked two. The Lions were then
trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh on
a Graham RBI single. With the bases loaded,
UNA then pinch-hit Trey Pollard, who had a
game-winning hit on Sunday against Catawba.
OBU's Steve Smith struckout Pollard to end
the threat and record the save. Miller (5-1)
took the loss.
