FLORENCE
--With their post-season hopes on the
line, the University of North Alabama
baseball team stepped up with a sweep of
Alabama-Huntsville to earn the final East
Division spot in the 2008 Gulf South
Conference Tournament.
UNA entered the
day tied with UAH at 6-9 in the GSC but
picked up 10-4 and 6-2 wins to claim the
final East Division spot.
The Lions are
now 29-19 overall and 8-9 in league play.
The Chargers fall to 21-30 and 6-11.
Junior
outfielder Trey Pollard provided key hits in
both UNA wins, doubling in the go-ahead run
in the sixth inning as the Lions overcame a
4-2 deficit in the opener, then driving in
another pivotal run in the nightcap.
Matt
Vandenheuvel (4-3) got the win in the opener
in four scoreless innings of relief. Starter
Branden Tepe pitched five innings and
allowed four runs on four hits. The Lions
12-hit attack was led by Qualon Millender,
Matt Horton, Nick Newberry and Kyle Jones
with two hits each. Millender also homered
in the game.
In the
nightcap, Justin Fleming almost went the
distance, allowing just two runs on six hits
through 6 2/3 innings. Jeff Schafer came on
and allowed one hit before recording the
final out to get the save.
UNA out-hit the
Chargers 8-7, led by Cole Mitchell and
Newberry with two hits each.
Both teams
conclude their regular seasons on Sunday
witha single game at 1 p.m.
