FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama
offense got 12 hits and three Lion pitchers
managed to hold a potent Bellarmine lineup
to four runs on seven hits as the Lions
claimed the series against the Knights with
an 8-4 win at University Field. The two
teams split a double-header on Saturday.
UNA starter
Branden Tepe, a junior from Mishaka, Ind.,
retired the first 11 batters he faced before
running into trouble in the fourth inning.
After allowing a run in the fourth, he
retired the Knights in order in the fifth
before allowing three straight hits with one
out in the sixth. Sophomore Jordan West of
Florence came on allowed an infield single
but then struckout the next two batters to
end the threat with UNA still ahead 6-3.
West left the
game in the seventh after walking two
batters but he had also recorded two
strikeouts.
Freshman Trey
Mitchell of Florence then came on and earned
his first save of the season. He allowed one
single and then retired the final seven
batters in order. Tepe (2-0) allowed three
runs on five hits over 5 1/2 innings. West
pitched 1 1/3 and Mitchell the final 2 1/3.
UNA broke on
top with a run in the second inning when
Trey Pollard singled and later scored on a
Kyle Jones sacrifice fly.
Bellarmine tied
it in the fourth but UNA erupted for four
runs in the bottom of the inning. Daniel
Johnson singled and stole second. Trey
Polard then walked and Cole Mitchell got
down a bunt single that the Knights' third
baseman made a late and errant throw that
allowed Johnson to score. The first baseman
then threw back wildly to home, allowing
Pollard to also score. Ross Parker then
walked and stole second and the third run of
the inning scored on a Jones ground-out. An
RBI single by Qualon Millender made it 5-1.
A pair of doubles by Jeffery Ritter and
Pollard gave UNA a run in the fifth to make
it 6-1. After Bellarmine got two runs back
in the sixth, UNA added another run on a
Jackon Agee RBI double that scored Parker.
UNA's final run
came in the eighth on a Cole Mitchell double
and an RBI single by Jones. Jones finished
the day 1-for-2 officially with three RBI as
he had a sacrifice fly, a sacrifice bunt, a
ground-out that scored a run and an RBI
single. Mitchell was 3-for-4 with two runs
scored.
