PULASKI, Tenn.
-- University of North Alabama baseball
coach Mike Lane got his 1,000th win as a
collegiate head coach Tuesday as the Lions
downed Martin Methodist 16-6.
Lane, who began
his head coaching career at Cochise
Community College in Arizona in 1979, is in
his 25th season at UNA and now has a
1,000-466-12 record. Lane won 115 games in
five seasons on the community college level
and has won 885 games at North Alabama while
leading the Lions to 24 consecutive winning
seasons.
In a game that
started as a pitcher's duel, UNA finished
with 12 hits and got solid relief pitching
from Ryan Miller and Matt Vandenheuvel.
Miller got his first win of the season in 4
1/3 innings in relief of Randall Shrouder.
Shrouder was pulled after 1 1/3 innings and
Miller took the game into the sixth before
giving way to Vandenheuvel. In the final 3
1/3 innings, Vandenheuvel allowed just three
hits and one run with four strikeouts to get
the save.
UNA got a run
in the second inning and added four more if
the fifth, but the game was far from over.
The Hawks got a run in the bottom of the
fifth but UNA pushed it to 7-1 in the top of
the sixth. A five-run sixth inning got the
Hawks back in the game at 7-6 but
Vandenheuvel stopped the Martin Methodist
rally short. UNA then scored nine runs over
the final three innings for the win. Trey
Pollard had a double and a triple and Andrew
Knerr and Qualon Millender added two hits
each. Ross Parker scored three runs and
drove in two more. The Lions stole eight
bases in the game, led by Millender with
three.
North Alabama
is now 6-1 overall and Martin Methodist
falls to 6-6.
