-- A pair of strong pitching performances
led the University of North Alabama baseball
team to a sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan
Saturday as the Lions improved to 8-1
overall. UNA downed Kentucky Wesleyan 13-3
in the opener, then added a 6-2 win in the
nightcap.
In the opener,
Branden Tepe started and went 3 2/3 innings
before leaving with a 3-2 lead in the
fourth.
Matt
Vandenheuvel (2-0) then came on and held the
Panthers two just two hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Freshman Trey Mitchell pitched a perfect
seventh inning to close the game.
At the plate,
UNA got a run in the first and two in the
third before Kentucky Wesleyan managed two
runs in the fourth. The Lions answered in
the bottom of the fourth with six runs and
then added two more in the fifth and two in
the sixth for the win. It marked the fifth
time this season that UNA has scored 10 or
more runs in a game.
Kyle Jones and
Cole Mitchell led the Lions with three hits
each and Matt Horton, Jeffery Ritter, Trey
Pollard, Nick Newberry and Qualon Millender
had two hits each. Mitchell drove in four
runs and scored once.
In the
nightcap, Jeff Schafer (2-1) pitched five
strong innings, allowing just two runs on
four hits. He walked three and struckout
five. Ryan Miller then pitched the final
two innings, allowing just one hit.
UNA got a run
in the first, another in the second before
the Panthers tied the game in the top of the
third.
The Lions
reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the
third with two runs and added two more in
the fifth.
Horton led UNA
with three hits and seven Lions had hits in
the game.
The Lions and
Panthers will play another double-header on
Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. UNA leads the
all- time series with KWC 7-1.
