MILLINGTON, Tenn.
-- Fresh off a sweep of
Alabama-Huntsville in its final
regular-season series, the University of
North Alabama baseball team will begin its
quest for a Gulf South Conference crown
Saturday when the Lions face Delta State at
4:15 at USA Stadium in the first round of
the GSC Tournament.
UNA, 29-19
overall and fourth in the GSC East Division,
will face the GSC West Division champion
Statesmen.
The Lions
haven't won a GSC baseball crown since 1999
and missed the tournament last season. UNA
reached the semifinals in 2006 and the
finals in 2005, both in Millington.
North Alabama
entered the final conference series tied
with Alabama-Huntsville for fourth place in
the East and locked in a battle for the
final conference tournament spot. UNA ralied
for a 10-4 win in the opener and added a 6-2
victory in the nightcap to keep its season
alive.
North Alabama
has won five GSC baseball titles, all under
current head coach Mike Lane. He led the
Lions to a GSC championship in his first
season at the school in 1984, and has added
GSC titles in 1989, 1993, 1995 and 1999.
