FLORENCE
-- North Alabama jumped out to an 8-1
lead early and picked up a key 12-6 Gulf
South Conference win over Montevallo
Sunday at Mike Lane Field. The Lions
pounded four Montevallo pitchers for 15
hits and scored two runs in the first,
two in the second and three in the third
for an 8-1 lead. The Falcons closed the
gap to 8-6 in the eighth but UNA put up
four runs of its own in the bottom of
the eight for the 12-6 win.
UNA starter Chad Boughner (6-2) was
dominant early and allowed just three
runs on seven hits over six innings. He
struckout seven.
With the win, UNA is now 24-13 overall
and 3-3 in the GSC. Despite dropping two
of the three games against Montevallo,
UNA is third in the GSC standings.
UNA got a leadoff double from Qualon
Millender and a single from Trey Pollard
before Dewayne Gunn ripped a three-run
homer to right field. In the second Kyle
Jones walked and Millender singled
before Pollard drove in both with a
two-run single. Montevallo got a run in
the top of the third but UNA put up
three more in the bottom of the frame.
Collin Murphy singled and Daniel Johnson
and Jones walked to load the bases.
Millender then ripped a triple over
first base to plate three runs.
Montevallo got two solo homers from Ryan
Norman and a two-run homer from Cory
Luckie to close the gap to 8-6. In the
bottom of the eighth UNA got a two-run
double from Collin Murphy and a two-run
single from Johnson to put the game out
of reach.
Millender, Pollard and Johnson had three
hits each for UNA. Johnson, who had a
tremendous series for the Lions, tagged
out his fourth runner at home in two
days.
