MAGNOLIA, Ark.
– The University of North
Alabama baseball team went 12
innings without scoring a run
Saturday but rallied over the
final two innings of the day to
earn a split with No. 2 ranked
Southern Arkansas. UNA was
downed 12-0 in the opener by SAU
but pulled out a 6-5 win in the
nightcap.
With the split UNA is now 7-5
overall. Southern Arkansas drops
to 11-3.
In the second game UNA trailed
5-0 after five innings before
mounting a rally that plated
three runs in the sixth and
three more in the seventh. Then,
with two outs in the bottom of
the seventh, UNA’s Patrick
Hinton gave up a triple to
Paschal . The Lions then
intentionally walked the next
two batters to load the bases.
Hinton earned his second win of
the season when he got L.
Williams to fly-out to rightf
for the final out. UNA was
out-hit 10-7 in the game.
In the seventh, Ross Parker and
Blake Stroth both singled. Chase
Porch then singled in a run to
cut the lead to 5-4. Josh Cyr
was then hit-by-pitch to load
the bases. A fielder’s choice
off the bat of Jared Mothershed
drove in the tying run . He then
stole second and Dewayne Gunn
was intentionally walked to load
the bases. Another fielder’s
choice by Nick McGregor scored
Porch with the go-ahead run.
Trey Mitchell started for UNA
and allowed five runs on eight
hits over five inning. Hinton
then pitched the final two
innings, allowing no runs on two
hits. Parker and Porch led UNA
in the game with two hits each.
In the opener, SAU out-hit UNA
15-2 in the opener as Hayden
Simpson two-hit the Lions over
the first six innings. Simpson
(4-0) got the win and Brian
Biggerstaff pitched a scoreless
seventh.
UNA starter Chase Porch,making
his first start of the season,
gave up four runs on eight hits
in just 3 1/3 innings. Reliever
Casey Jones allowed eight runs
on seven hits over two and 2/3
innings but five of the runs
were unearned.
Nick McGregor and Jared
Mothershed had UNA’s only two
hits.
The Lions and Muleriders will
play again Sunday in a single
game.
