BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
-- A pair of University of North Alabama
golfers who have helped lead their team to
one of the most successful seasons in school
history have been honored as All-Gulf South
Conference selections by the league's head
coaches.
UNA senior
Daniel Creel of Killen and sophomore Wes
Smith of Florence were both named first-team
All-GSC for 2007. The duo, both former
standouts at Brooks High School, have helped
lead UNA to a combined 72-6 overall record,
with two first-place, two second-place and a
fifth place finish in five tournaments.
Creel, who was
also first-team All-GSC in 2006, has posted
a 71.8 stroke average in five tournaments
this Spring. He was first in the Bobcat
Invitational at Georgia College, was third
in the UNA Classic and the Otter
Invitational at Cal State-Monterey Bay, was
sixth at the Grover Page Classic and 11th at
the Southeastern Collegiate.
Smith has a
72.4 stroke average in his 13 rounds this
season. He tied for first at the Grover Page
Classic with a three-round, 208 total. He
was also third at the Bobcat Invitational,
fourth at the Southeastern Collegiate,
seventh at the Otter Invitational at Cal
State-Monterey Bay and was 15th at the UNA
Classic. He made three all-tournament teams
this spring.
The Lions will
compete in the Gulf South Conference
championships on April 23-24 in Hot Springs,
Ark.
