SMITH TIES FOR TENTH
ALLENDALE, Mich.
-- The University of North Alabama golf team
turned in its best round of the four-day
NCAA Division II Golf Championships on
Friday to finish 12th in the nation in the
20-team field.
UNA shot a
15-over-par 299 on Friday to move from 13th
to 12th in the final standings. The Lions
had previous rounds of 301, 311 and 306.
Barry University, a team that UNA soundly
defeated in winning the NCAA Division II
South Regional, won the national
championship with a final 1,186 total for a
+50. Barry nudged South Carolina Upstate by
a single stroke and Florida Southern by two
strokes. UNA finished at +81.
UNA sophomore
Wes Smith finished tenth overall with a 295
total. He had rounds of 74, 77, 74 and 70.
Of the 44 UNA golfers all-time to compete in
the NCAA Championships, Smith's finish is
second best only to Jason Vaughn's No. 2
finish in 2002.
This was UNA's
seventh trip as a team to the Division II
Championships since 1996. UNA finished 12th
in 1996, 14th in 2000, fourth in 2002, sixth
in 2003, 13th in 2004, 14th in 2006 and 12th
in 2007.
