MUSCLE
SHOALS, Ala. -- There was little
drama for the University of North Alabama
golf team Wednesday as the Lions turned in a
tournament low round of 279 to win the NCAA
Division II South Regional by a whopping 18
strokes over Florida Southern.
UNA led all
three rounds of the tournament, posting
rounds of 290, 290 and 279. Four of the five
Lion golfers were under par on the front
nine in the final round and strong finishes
by Daniel Creel and Wes Smith locked up the
win for the Lions.
The win sends
the Lions on to compete in the Division II
National Championship tournament in two
weeks in Allendale, Mich.
North Alabama's
859 total was followed by Florida Southern
(877), Barry (877), Florida Gulf Coast
(880), West Florida (885), Nova Southeastern
(885), Valdosta State (890) and Lynn (894).
Individually,
Creels' final round 65 vaulted him into
second place overall, finishing two strokes
behind Florida Gulf Coast's Steven Taylor.
UNA's Wes Smith had a final round 70 to
finish third overall at 213. A 69 by the
Lions' Brett Munson was also huge as he
finished tied for 11th at 220.
The regional
title is the third for the Lion golf team.
UNA won back-to-back South Region titles in
2002 and 2003. UNA will be making its
seventh trip to the Division II National
Championships since 1996. UNA finished 13th
in 1996, 14th in 2000, 4th in 2002, 6th in
2003, 13th in 2004 and 14th in 2006.
