UNA'S MUNSON RANKED EIGHTH AMONG ALL COLLEGIATE GOLFERS

Return to UNA Golf Homepage >>>

FLORENCE -- University of North Alabama senior golfer Brett Munson of Louisville, Ky., is ranked eighth nationally among all collegiate golfers in the latest Golfstat Cup standings.

The rankings include all NCAA Division I, II and III golfers, as well as the NAIA. In addition to being eighth nationally among all divisions, Munson is the top ranked NCAA Division II golfer.

Munson, an All-Gulf South Conference, All-South Region and All-America selection for the Lions last season, won three of the five tournaments that he played in in the fall and shot a remarkable 28-under-par in his last four tournaments. Munson's average round for the fall was 69.20.

Diego Velasquez of Oregon State is ranked first nationally, followed by six other Division I golfers, then Munson.

"Brett had an unbelievable fall," said UNA golf coach Stuart Clark. "It was probably the best of any UNA player ever. Golf is a numbers game and the numbers don't lie. He shot 28-under-par in his last four tournaments and that's not just good, that's phenomenal."

Clark said Munson has earned his rightful place and collegiate golf's elite.

"In some sports you can't compare numbers but in golf you can," said Clark. "For Brett to be in the Top 10 among all divisions from the thousands of golfers competing is a real credit to his hard work and dedication."

Clark said he thinks Munson's maturity is what has helped him consistently perform at a high level.

"Brett is a phenomenal ball striker, but his mental toughness is even more remarkable. To me he is like a seasoned 35-year-old golf veteran in a 23-year olds body."

The Golfstat Cup begin in 1995-96 with Tiger Woods of Stanford as the first winner. The 13 winners that have followed have also been from Division I schools and all have gone on to professional golfing careers.

With a strong spring, Munson would have a chance to become the first Division II winner of the award.
