UNA'S PORTER WINS GSC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS,
LIONS FINISH SIXTH AS A TEAM
 
HOT SPRINGS, Ark.
-- University of North Alabama senior James Porter of Helensvale, Australia won medalist honors at the 2005 Gulf South Conference Men's Golf Championship with a six-under-par 210 total for three rounds.
Delta State University won its first-ever GSC title, edging West Florida, 864-870, while UNA finished sixth at 895.
            Porter topped the field with a 54-hole, -6, 210 (71-67-72), three-shots ahead of second place finishers, Delta State's Kevin Jones (75-68-70) and Arkansas Tech's Brent Wilson (74-69-70).  Central Arkansas' Mauricio Galeno (71-72-71) and West Florida's Matthew Berzovich (72-75-67) tied for fourth (-2), while UWF's Andrea Signor (71-74-70) and Valdosta State's Spencer Provow (71-74-71) rounded out the First Team All-GSC squad (top seven finishers). West Georgia's Brandon Bennett earned the GSC Freshman of the Year honor posting the highest score by any freshman in the Tournament (14th, 75-72-73).
Porter is just the second UNA player to ever win a GSC individual golf crown. Former Lion Stuart Clark won GSC medalits honors in 1996. Central Arkansas finished third with an 877, followed by 2004 champion Arkansas Tech (881) and Valdosta State (882).  North Alabama finished sixth with an 895, followed by West Georgia (898) and Montevallo and Henderson State which tied for eighth with a 913.  Lincoln Memorial (932) rounded out the top ten followed by Ouachita Baptist (944), Harding (957), Southern Arkansas (965), Christian Brothers (975) and Arkansas-Monticello (1006).
