Lions Pull Away from
Arkansas Tech 38-14
FLORENCE, Ala. – North Alabama broke
open a 10-7 game in the third quarter with four
second half touchdowns and rolled to a 38-14
Gulf South Conference win over Arkansas Tech at
Braly Municipal Stadium.
The Lions, ranked
No. 3 in the NCAA Division II, got two touchdown
runs each from A.J. Milwee and Tim Hicks and
touchdown reception from Anthony Merritt in
recording the win over the 3-2 Wonder Boys.
UNA jumped out
to a 10-0 lead in the first half but a Tech
score and a missed Lion field goal near the end
of the half left the game at 10-7 at
intermission .A 43-yard Hicks run with just over
a minute left in the third period began the UNA
rally and the Lions coasted down the stretch.
UNA finished
with 467 yards of total offense, gaining 206
rushing and 261 passing. Arkansas Tech had 419
yards but lost three turnovers.
Milwee led the
Lion effort, rushing for 81 yards on 20 carries
and completing 20 of 30 passes for 229 yards and
one TD. Hicks finished with 59 yards and two
scores on just four carries.
North Alabama
opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal
from Yuta Fukuda with 3:30 left in the first
quarter.
Milwee scored
the game’s first touchdown at the 14:27 mark of
the second on a 12-yard run that capped an
eight-play, 64-yard drive.
Fukuda’s PAT made it 10-0.
Arkansas Tech
got back in the game near the end of the half
when Cole Barthel hit Mark Caldwell with a
50-yard scoring pass.
Travis Cockerham added the extra-point to make
it 10-7 with 2:40 left in the half.
UNA drove the
length of the field but Fukuda’s 23-yard field
goal attempt was wide left with six seconds left
in the half.
The third quarter was scoreless until Hicks
broke numerous tackles on his way to a 43-yard
touchdown run with 1:14 left in the period.
Fukuda’s PAT pushed UNA’s advantage to 17-7.
A 20-yard
Derrell Ashford interception set up UNA’s next
score as Milwee went in from eight yards out to
cap a quick three-play, 26- yard drive. Fukuda’s
kick made it 24-7 with 13:14 left in the game.
Tech answered
that score quickly as Caldwell split two UNA
defenders and went 60 yards on a touchdown
reception from Barthel.
Cockerham’s kick made it 24-14 with 12:01 left
to play.
UNA ground out
an 11-play, 63-yard drive on its next possession
with Hicks scoring from five yards out. Fukuda
added the PAT to give UNA a solid 31-14 lead
with 6:20 to play.
The game’s final
score came on a 32-yard touchdown pass from
back-up quarterback Dusty Goodwin to Merritt.
Scott Shurden kicked the PAT to make the final
count 38-14.
UNA plays at
Ouachita Baptist next Saturday at 3 p.m.
