After completing a record-breaking career as a
wide receiver and return specialists, North
Alabama senior Anthony Merritt became just the
13th Lion player to be named an American
Football Coaches Association (AFCA) First-Team
All-American.
The 6-0, 189-pound Columbus, Ga., native was
among the top 11 offensive players in Division
II to receive the first-team recognition. He
caught
48 passes for 541 yards and four touchdowns for
the Lions in 2006. He also rushed for 181 yards
and a touchdown and also threw three touchdown
passes as UNA went 11-1 and advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Merritt adds the honor to a long list of
accomplishments during his four-year tenure at
UNA. His career includes19 school records, seven
Gulf South Conference records and four NCAA
Division II records at the single-game,
single-season and career levels.
Merritt’s recognition gives UNA an AFCA first
team All-American for the third consecutive
year. Defensive lineman Ken Triplett received
the honor in 2004, while center Lance Ancar
earned the same accolades last season.
