FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama's drive
for a possible NCAA Division II National
Championship will continue Saturday when the
Lions host Delta State in the second round
of the playoffs at Braly Municipal Stadium.
UNA, 9-1
overall and seeded second in the Southeast
Region, received a first round bye while
Delta State fought its way into the second
round with a 45-7 win at home over Shaw
University.
Kickoff for the
Nov. 24 playoff contest is noon Central
time.
North Alabama
defeated Delta State 28-17 back on October
18 in a regular-season contest at Braly
Stadium. This game will mark the 10th time
that UNA has played the same school twice in
a season and the Lions are 6-3 in those
previous rematch games. UNA also downed
Delta State in the regular season in 2006
(17-10) but the Statesmen came back and beat
the Lions 27-10 at Braly in the quarterfinal
round of the playoffs.
North Alabama
has a 23-9 all-time record in the playoffs
which gives the Lions more wins in the post-
season than any current Division II member
institution. UNA's .719 winning percentage
is the second best all- time in Division II
history among schools that have played 10 or
more games.
UNA has been
selected for the Division II playoffs in
1980, 1983, 1985, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994,
1995, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007 and is
the only school to have won three straight
national championships (1993-95) in Division
II history.
This marks
UNA's third straight playoff appearance
under head coach Mark Hudspeth and fourth
appearance in the last five years.
