MONTICELLO,
Ark. – A 37-point first
half paved the way as the third
ranked University of North Alabama
Lions rolled to a 46-27 rout of
Arkansas-Monticello at Boll Weevil
Stadium.
UNA
scored on its first two possessions
of the game and built a 30-point
advantage by halftime. The Lions
used reserve quarterbacks Dusty
Goodwin and Ret Tolleson in the
final two periods and held on for a
19-point victory.
The win keeps UNA’s record perfect
at 6-0 overall and the Lions are now
5-0 in the Gulf South Conference. It
was the Lions 18th straight
regular-season win, 10th straight
regular-season road win and 12th
straight win over Arkansas schools.
It was also UNA’s fifth straight win
over UAM.
Arkansas-Monticello is now 2-5
overall and 1-3 in the GSC. North
Alabama finished with 448 yards of
offense, with 245 on the ground and
203 through the air. Starting
quarterback A.J. Milwee, who only
played in the first half, was
eight-of-14 for 111 yards and three
touchdowns and he rushed for 39
yards and one score. Brandenn
Pickett led the ground attack with
86 yards. The Lions forced four
turnovers in the game but also gave
up three.
UNA’s David McCants returned the
opening kickoff 30 yards, then raced
43 yards with a handoff on the first
play from scrimmage. Three plays
later A.J. Milwee threw a five-yard
TD pass to freshman Kyle Turner of
Cullman, Ala. Scott Shurden added
the PAT and UNA led 7-0 with 13:08
left in the first quarter.
The
Lions were back in the end zone on
their next possession as UNA marched
80 yards in 11 plays for the score.
A 25-yard run by receiver Ed Gant
moved the ball to the UAM seven and
Milwee had a five-yard TD run two
plays later. Shurden’s kick made it
14-0 at the 4:23 mark of the first
period.
Arkansas-Monticello’s high-powered
offense kicked in on the next series
and went 75 yards in eight plays.
J.L. Williams rushed for 46 yards on
five carries on the drive, including
the final three yards for the
touchdown. Nick Green added the PAT
and UNA’s lead was cut to 14-7.
After a defensive stand by UAM, the
Boll Weevils were again moving the
ball until Michael Johnson stepped
in front of a Scott Buisson pass at
midfield and returned it 23 yards to
the UAM 27. On the first play
following the turnover, receiver
Joemal Campbell took a handoff from
Milwee and threw a 27-yard TD pass
to Ed Gant.
Shurden’s extra-point attempt was
partially blocked but made it
through the uprights for a 21-7
lead.
On UAM’s next possession, Tim Hunt
broke through to sack Buisson and
the Lions lead was 23-7 with 12:51
left in the half.
North Alabama took the ensuing
kickoff and marched 52 yards to the
end zone in nine plays. The Lions
faced a fourth-and-three call at the
UAM 45 but Milwee hit Brandon
Alldredge for an 18-yard gain to the
27. Four plays later Milwee lofted a
pass to the far right corner of the
end zone to Alldredge for a 13-yard
touchdown. Shurden’s kick extended
UNA’s lead to 30-7.
Derrick Chatman recovered a UAM
fumble deep in Boll Weevil territory
on the next possession but back-up
quarterback Dusty Goodwin fumbled
the ball back to Monticello on the
next play.
After North Alabama forced a punt,
Milwee fired a 46-yard TD pass to
Reggie Hubbard down the left
sideline. Kenny Spencer kicked the
PAT and UNA led 37-7 with 4:25
remaining in the half.
Following an interception by
Hilliard Foster, UNA drove to the
Monticello 15 before the drive
stalled. A 32-yard field goal
attempt by Shurden was wide right
with eight seconds left in the half
and UNA led 37-7 at intermission.
Arkansas-Monticello got a 22-yard
touchdown run by Buisson at the 10
minute mark of the third quarter and
cut UNA’s lead to 37-14. Two plays
later Solomon Edwards picked off a
Goodwin pass and the Boll Weevils
appeared to have new life. The Lion
defense held, however, and Tolleson
came on to lead a Lion scoring
drive. Shurden’s 25-yard field goal
put the score at 40-14 with 13:26
left in the game.
UAM
answered quickly with another
touchdown as Buisson scrambled and
then found Jywin Caesar in the end
zone with a five-yard TD pass. The
extra-point attempt failed and UNA
led 40-20 with 11:07 left in the
game.
Gant took the ensuing kickoff back
66 yards to the UAM four to set up
the Lions next score. Tolleson raced
in for a touchdown on the next play
but Spencer’s PAT missed, leaving
UNA’s lead at 46-20 with 10:50 to
play.

plays with its next possession and
Buisson passed 22 yards to Johnny
Polite for the touchdown. Green’s

receiver Jason Messing had one catch
in the game to extend his school
record for consecutive games with a
catch to 30.
