FLORENCE
-- The first day of practice for the
University of North Alabama football team
was a productive but extremely hot day,
according to head coach Mark Hudspeth.
UNA put its
newcomers through an early morning workout
and put the veterans through a two-hour
afternoon practice session at Veteran's
Park.
"I think our
first day was very productive and our kids
came out at a high tempo and were eager to
practice," Hudspeth said. "In the veteran's
practice you could really tell that there
was a lot of retention from the Spring."
Hudspeth said
the Lions spent the first day installing
their offensive and defensive schemes. "Our
players worked extremely hard but we really
had to fight our way through the heat."
Due to the
100-plus temperatures forecast for Monday,
Hudspeth said the Lions would consolidate
their newcomers and veteran's practices into
one morning session at 9:30 at Veteran's
Park.
Hudspeth said
the morning practice was extremely important
as the UNA coaching staff began evaluating
which newcomers would be able to step up and
help the team immediately.
Among the
newcomers that Hudspeth praised Sunday were
wide receiver Charles McClain, wide receiver
Ed Gant and safety Harrison Bryant.
UNA opens its
2007 season at home on Sept. 8 against
Tusculum. The defending Gulf South
Conference champions have also been picked
as the favorite to win the 2007 title in a
preseason poll of league coaches.
