FLORENCE --
The University of North Alabama has announced
its 2007 football schedule that UNA Athletic
Director Dr. Joel Erdmann says includes one of
the most attractive home schedules in several
years.The Lions
2007 slate is a 10-game schedule that includes
six home games, four road games and non-
conference battles with Tusculum and Delta
State. "We're happy that all of our games
are Division II, in-region games," said Erdmann,
who is also a member of the Division II Football
National Committee. "We currently do have an
opening in the schedule for an earlier game and
if an appropriate opponent arises, we'll explore
adding another game,"
UNA had just four
regular-season home games in 2006 and the Lions
played eight games on the road in 2005.
The Lions 2007 schedule opens on Sept. 8 at home
against Tusculum in the final game of a
four-year series with the Pioneers. UNA is 3-0
against the South Atlantic Conference school.
UNA's remaining home games are on Sept. 22
against Southern Arkansas, October 6 against
Ouachita Baptist, October 18 against Delta
State, November 3 against West Georgia and
November 10 against West Alabama. The November 3
date with West Georgia will also serve as the
Lions' Homecoming.
"This is our best
schedule for our home fans in several years,"
said Erdmann.
The Lions have had some
difficulty scheduling non-conference opponents
in recent years and Erdmann said he appreciates
the relationship UNA has had with Tusculum.
"Our series with Tusculum has been a great
in-region series. Their willingness to play is
an example of what is recommended to be done
within the spirit of scheduling in our
division."
North Alabama will play
road games at Harding (Sept. 13), Arkansas Tech
(Sept. 29), Arkansas-Monticello (Oct. 13) and
Valdosta State (Oct. 27). Two of UNA's
games are also scheduled to be televised as part
of the Gulf South Conference TV package with
Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS). Both of
those games - Sept. 13 against Harding and Oct.
18 against Delta State - will be on Thursday.
This will be the last year of the current GSC
rotating schedule, with the revised schedule
going into effect in 2008.
The Lions went 11-1 last season and reached the
quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs and
will return more than 40 lettermen from that
squad, including 15 starters.
