FLORENCE -- Having made a run at the
NCAA Division II Football Championship in three
of the last four seasons, the University of
North Alabama football team will officially
begin that quest for the 2007 national title on
March 11 when the Lions open Spring football
drills.
UNA's 15 Spring practice sessions will include
two scrimmages and conclude with the
Purple-White Spring Game on April 14 at Braly
Stadium.
North Alabama went 11-1
last season, winning the Gulf South Conference
championship and advancing to the quarterfinals
of the Division II playoffs. The playoff
appearance was the 12th in school history and
the third in the last four years under current
head coach Mark Hudspeth.
Since 2003, the Lions
have a combined 40-10 record, have won two GSC
titles and reached the playoff semifinals twice.
More than 40 lettermen from UNA's 2006 squad
will take part in the Spring workouts. That list
includes All-GSC performers Covinton Wright
(TE), Michael Johnson (LB) and Lyle Atkinson
(P), as well as starting quarterback A.J. Milwee,
back-up quarterback Dusty Goodwin and the team's
leading rushers- Eric Packer and Tim Hicks.
