FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama football team
reached the mid-point of its 2007 Spring
Workouts Thursday with a scrimmage at Braly
Stadium that was largely dominated by the
defense. The offense struggled to move the
ball and the defense also forced numerous
turnovers.
UNA
head coach Mark Hudspeth, who has led the Lions
to the NCAA playoffs in three of the last four
seasons, said the most obvious thing after the
scrimmage was that the Lions would have to
improve their play at quarterback and receiver.
"It
was a combination of our defense playing really
well and our offense struggling," Hudspeth said.
"Our quarterback play did not allow us to
execute well offensively and led to us getting
frustrated. We have to improve our
quarterback play."In all, UNA quarterbacks were
intercepted six times Thursday by six different
defenders.
Running back Tim Hicks scored on a 10-yard run
and Dusty Goodwin passed to Joemal Campbell for
another score.
UNA
starting quarterback A.J. Milwee suffered a
sprained shoulder in the scrimmage when he was
hit, even though the Lion quarterbacks were not
live. Hudspeth said Milwee will return to
practice after Spring Break.
The
Lions will not return to the practice field for
11 days due to Spring Break.
The
defending Gulf South Conference champions have
more than 40 lettermen returning from last
season's team that went 11-1 and advanced to the
quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs.
