FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama's
first team offense had some impressive
moments Saturday but it was the UNA defense
that stole the show and posted a 34-24 win
in the 2008 Purple-White Game at Braly
Stadium.
Led by veteran
quarterback A.J. Milwee, the Lions
first-team offense scored touchdowns on two
long drives with Milwee throwing TD passes
to Charles McClain and Ed Gant.
But it was the
Lion defense in the purple jerseys that
tallied the most points by halting drives
and gaining a turnover.
The UNA offense
was without the services of the team's top
two running backs and that played a key
role, head coach Mark Hudspeth said.
'The offense
was limited in the running game, so that
made it tough to be consistent,' he said.
"But it was good to see them put some drives
together.
"A.J. did a
good job even though not letting him get hit
took away some of his effectiveness. McClain
and Gant both showed they can be playmakers
for us, and we only had one turnover.'
'We held out
some of our defensive lineman, but the young
guys did a good job getting some pressure on
the quarterback,' Hudspeth said. 'They got
their hands up and knocked down some passes.
'Zach Taylor
was one guy that really had a good day on
the defensive line. Chad Daniel had another
good day at cornerback and has been
outstanding all spring. It was good to see
our defense play well and only give up one
big play.'
