FLORENCE -- Just three practice
sessions into the 2008 Spring drills,
University of North Alabama Head Coach Mark
Hudspeth is already concerned about the
Lions mounting injuries.
With the team's top three
running backs already out of the lineup for
most or all of the Spring drills, UNA has
lost two interior linemen as well in the
last two days. Lineman Luke Chenault
suffered a torn achilles on Friday and will
be out for six months. That injury comes
after tackle Michael Hathorn was injured on
Tuesday and will miss at least a week of
practice.
"We're getting real thin on
the offensive line," said Hudspeth. "The
good news is that it will give some of the
other guys a chance to get in the lineup and
get a lot of reps. At the same time, at some
positions just a few guys will get all the
reps and you risk them being injured with 12
practices left to go."
Hudspeth said there was good
news as well from the team's first day in
pads. He said junior quarterback Genario
McNealy who transferred from Mississippi
Gulf Coast Community College is improving as
he picks up the Lions' offensive system. He
also praised the play of defensive linemen
Montrell Craft and Kerry Orr.
The Lions went through a two
hour workout Friday and will now take off
the remainder of the weekend
before returning to the practice field on
Monday.
