BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
—
The University of North Alabama had four
student-athletes honored on the Gulf
South Conference 2009 Fall Sports
All-Academic Teams.
Junior Sarah Roberts of Maryville,
Tenn., was named to the Academic All-GSC
volleyball team, while senior Tassia
Augusto of Sao Paulo, Brazil was
selected for Academic All-GSC women's
soccer honors for the third straight
year.
UNA football players Will Batson of
Killen, Ala., and Luke Chenault of
Moulton, Ala., received Academic All-
GSC football honors for the second time
each.
Overall, seventy-eight student-athletes
were selected for the Fall Academic All-GSC
teams in the sports of men’s cross
country (7), women’s cross country (9),
football (23), men’s soccer (13),
women’s soccer (11) and volleyball (15).
Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by
the GSC Sports Information Directors (SIDs)
and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs)
in a joint vote. Nominees must have an
overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of
3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their
entire academic career and may not be
freshmen or first-semester or quarter
transfers. The student-athlete must be a
significant contributor to the squad.
Other factors include leadership,
community service and extra-curricular
activities. SIDs and FARs are not
allowed to vote for their own student-
athletes. The number of student-athletes
selected in each sport is determined by
the number of positions normally
involved in the playing of that sport.
Ties are not broken.
Roberts has a cumulative 3.84 grade
point average in Health, Physical
Education and Recreation-Exercise
Science. Augusto, who previously earned
Academic All-America honors as well, has
a 3.74 GPA, also in HPER.
Batson has a cumulative 3.61 GPA in
Economics and Finance and Chenault has a
3.80 GPA in Accounting.
