FLORENCE
-- In a state where football tradition
abounds like few others in the nation,
the University of North Alabama stands
at the top as the winningest college
football program in the state of Alabama
for the last 20 years.
Over the last 20 seasons, since 1990,
the UNA football program has an overall
171-67-1 record, which represents the
most wins by any state school. UNA also
has a 71.7 winning percentage since
1990, which is also the best in the
state. UNA had a combined 87-31-1 record
in the 1990s and an 84-36 mark in the
2000s.
Over the last two decades the Lions have
made 12 NCAA Division II playoff
appearances, won six NCAA Regional
Championships, six Gulf South Conference
Championships and three NCAA Division II
National Championships.
Coming a 14-0 season, the University of
Alabama moved into second place for most
wins in the last 20 years with 160.
Tuskegee is third with 159 and Auburn
and Troy have 157 each. Tuskegee ranks
second in winning percentage at 70.0,
followed by Auburn, Troy and Alabama.
UNA is coming off an 11-2 campaign in
2009, which was the Lions first season
with Terry Bowden as head coach. It
marked UNA's fifth straight season with
10 wins or more and the team's fifth
straight year in the Division II
playoffs.
