OFFENSE RALLIES FOR WIN IN PURPLE-WHITE SCRIMMAGE

FLORENCE -- Freshman quarterback Rodney Bivens threw two late touchdown passes to lead the White back from an early deficit and post a 35-32 win over the Purple in the University of North Alabama's annual Purple-White game.  The Purple, made up of the Lions defensive players, dominated the majority of the scrimmage, which included four eight minute quarters.....More

LIONS COMPLETE THIRD WEEK OF FOOTBALL WORKOUTS WITH SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE

FLORENCE  –  The University of North Alabama defense dominated much of Saturday's scrimmage at Braly Stadium as the Lions completed their third week of spring workouts.  Defensive end Tim Hunt led the charge with three  sacks and Donald Tharpe  and  defensive  tackle  Dusty  Shack added two sacks apiece.  Tharpe also added a tackle for a 10-yard loss on an option pitch and even dropped into coverage and broke up a pass. UNA  has  changed  its defensive scheme this spring under new coordinator Karl Morgan....More

LIONS COMPLETE SECOND WEEK OF FOOTBALL DRILLS WITH SCRIMMAGE

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama football team completed its second week of Spring football drills Saturday with a 90-minute scrimmage at the UNA practice field.  Head coach Mark Hudspeth said he say a lot of good things early but said his players tired as the scrimmage progressed.....More

LIONS OPEN SPRING FOOTBALL DRILLS MONDAY

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama football team will officially begin preparations for the 2005 season on Monday, March 21 when the Lions open their Spring drills at the UNA practice field at 3:15.   After reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs and winning a Gulf South Conference title in 2003, UNA slipped to a 5-5 record last season. The Lions have a wealth of talent returning from 2004 and have added several talented newcomers who will also take part in Spring workouts.   North Alabama has 44 lettermen returning from last season, with 20 back on offense, 21 on defense and three on special teams. Of that number, 14 are returning starters.....More

NORTH ALABAMA ANNOUNCES 2005 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama will try and make a run at the Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II football championships in 2005 against a schedule of opponents that the Lions went 5-5 against in 2004.  Coming off a 13-1 season in 2003 that saw UNA roll to a Gulf South Conference championship and into the semifinals of the Division II playoffs, the Lions tackled a rugged scheduled a year ago that included four schools that had won as many as nine games the previous season....More

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama has added a gem to an already impressive list of 2005 football signees with the signing of defensive tackle Kentrell Tanner.  Tanner, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound lineman from Brandon, Miss., transfers to UNA after a remarkable career at Hinds (Miss.) NORTH ALABAMA HIRES KARL MORGAN AS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

FLORENCE, Ala.
- Veteran collegiate coach and former UCLA standout Karl Morgan has been hired as the defensive coordinator at the University of North Alabama, according to lion head football coach Mark Hudspeth.  Morgan fills the spot left open when Charles Anthony resigned as defensive coordinator following the 2003 season.  This will be the sixth straight year that North Alabama will enter the season with a new defensive coordinator.....More

NORTH ALABAMA SIGNS 34 TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT

FLORENCE
-- University of North Alabama head football coach Mark Hudspeth has announced the signing of 34 student-athletes to national letters of intent with the Lion program.  Hudspeth's fourth recruiting class at UNA included 17 offensive players, 16 defenders and a kicker. UNA's recruiting class is diverse, with the largest additions coming on the offensive lineman, the offensive backfield, the defensive backfield and the defensive line, with each position accounting for six signees.  The Lions have also added the services of six mid-year transfers.....More

UNA'S OGLESBY TO PLAY IN CACTUS BOWL

FLORENCE -- University of North Alabama senior defensive back Evan Oglesby of Taccoa, Ga., has been invited to play in the annual Cactus Bowl NCAA Division II All-Star Game in January in Kingsville, Texas.  Oglesby, a four-year starter on the defensive units at North Alabama, will become the 16th Lion to play in the game - which originated as the Snow Bowl in Fargo, N.D., in 1993.....More

EIGHT LIONS NAMED TO ALL-GSC FOOTBALL TEAM

FLORENCE
-- The University of North Alabama had eight individuals named to the All-Gulf South Conference football team selected by the league's head coaches.  Five Lions received first-team honors.  Players selected for first-team All-GSC honors include center Lance Ancar, defensive lineman Kendrick Triplett, linebacker Courtney Wright, defensive back Evan Oglesby and return specialist
Anthony Merritt.  Players selected for second-team All-GSC honors include running back DeMarcus Blount and defensive backs Blake Farris and Jay Snipes...More

LIONS LOSE FOOTBALL FINALE AT WEST ALABAMA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A 31-yard touchdown pass from Josh Crouch to Andre Epps with six seconds left in the game gave West Alabama a come-from-behind 28-27 win over North Alabama at Tiger Stadium.  North Alabama led 27-15 in the fourth quarter before the Tigers rallied for two touchdowns and the victory.  UNA closed its 2004 season at 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the Gulf South Conference. LIONS UPSET BY BRAVES AT BRALY

FLORENCE – West Georgia picked off five North Alabama passes and rolled up 517 yards of total offense as the Braves upset the Lions 38-21 at Braly Municipal Stadium.  West Georgia built a 28-7 lead in the first half enroute to just its second win of the season. The Braves are no 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference, while North Alabama falls to 5-4 and 4-4.  UNA starting quarterback Chris Gunn was picked off five times in the contest, while West Georgia played a turnover free game.....More

FLORENCE -- With all post-season aspirations wiped away in a last-minute 24-20 loss to fifth ranked Valdosta State last Saturday, the University of North Alabama football team will turn its attention to trying to close the 2004 season with wins in its final two games against West Georgia and West Alabama.  The Lions, now 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the Gulf South Conference, were still very much in the race for an NCAA playoff bid prior to the loss to VSU....More
