WACO, TEX.– Despite
returning just six
starters from last
season's team that went
11-2 and won a Gulf
South Conference
Championship, the
University of North
Alabama will enter the
2010 season as the No. 3
ranked team in the
nation in American
Football Coaches
Association NCAA
Division II poll.
UNA finished the 2009
season ranked sixth
nationally after falling
in the quarterfinals of
the Division II
playoffs. It marked the
16th time since 1980
that UNA had ranked in
Division II final Top
20, and it was the fifth
season in a row that UNA
had ranked in the Top
six in the final poll.
"This ranking, like
several others that have
come out this preseason,
are just a testament to
the tradition and
expectations of the UNA
football program," said
UNA Head Football Coach
Terry Bowden. "There is
a great tradition here
and people expect you to
do well. Even though we
have just six starters
back, the expectation is
still there that we
should be a national
contender, and I
wouldn't want it any
other way. That's one of
the reasons I came to
North Alabama was
because of the tradition
and the high
expectations."
Defending national
champion Northwest
Missouri State opens up
2010 as the preseason
favorite to win the
national championship.
Northwest Missouri State
received 22 first place
votes, while 2009
national runner-up Grand
Valley State (Mich.)
received three and comes
in ranked No. 2. North
Alabama received the
final first place vote,
and is ranked No. 3,
with Minnesota-Duluth
and Central Washington
rounding out the Top 5.
The ranking marks the
56th consecutive
Division II poll where
UNA has been ranked No.
11 in the nation or
higher.
