NORTH ALABAMA
ANNOUNCES 2005 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE
FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama will try and
make a run at the Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II
football championships in 2005 against a schedule of opponents that
the Lions went 5-5 against in 2004. Coming off a 13-1 season
in 2003 that saw UNA roll to a Gulf South Conference championship
and into the semifinals of the Division II playoffs, the Lions
tackled a rugged scheduled a year ago that included four schools
that had won as many as nine games the previous season. UNA
will face that same schedule again in 2005, with only the sites
switched for each encounter. The Lions will open the season at
home on September 3 against Division II member Tusculum at 6 p.m.
UNA opened last season at Tusculum and posted a 28-7 win over the
Pioneers. That will be UNA's only non-conference game for
2005. The Lions will then tackle a nine-game GSC slate that includes
five road trips. North Alabama returns more than 40 lettermen
and 14 starters from last year's team. UNA opens its GSC
schedule on Sept. 10 at Arkansas-Monticello. Long-time Gulf
South Conference rival Delta State will then make its first trip to
Braly Stadium since 2001 for a Sept. 17 battle. UNA will also have
home games on Sept. 24 against Harding, Oct. 15 against Henderson
State and Nov. 5 against West Alabama. The Henderson State game on
Oct. 15 has been designated as UNA's Homecoming. The Lions
will also play road contests at Central Arkansas (Oct. 1), Southern
Arkansas (Oct. 8), Valdosta State (Oct. 22) and West Georgia (Oct.
29). The Blazers are the defending Division II National
Champions. UNA knocked off a No. 1 ranked Valdosta State team in
2003 in its last trip to Valdosta. UNA will open its 2004
Spring workouts on March 21, with the Spring Game set for April 23
at 10 a.m. at Braly Municipal Stadium.
