EIGHT LIONS NAMED TO ALL-GSC FOOTBALL TEAM
FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama had eight
individuals named to the All-Gulf South
Conference football team selected by the league's head coaches.
Five Lions received first-team honors. Players selected for
first-team All-GSC honors include center Lance Ancar, defensive
lineman
Kendrick Triplett, linebacker Courtney Wright, defensive back Evan
Oglesby and return specialist
Anthony Merritt. Players selected for second-team All-GSC
honors include running back DeMarcus Blount and defensive backs
Blake Farris and Jay Snipes. Oglesby, Ancar, Blount and
Merritt were also
All-GSC selections in 2003.
Ancar, a junior from Harvey, La.,
received first-team honors in 2003 also. Triplett, a senior
from Louisville, Miss. finished with 44 tackles this season,
including 12 for losses. Wright, a junior
from Wetumpka, Ala., finished the year with 71 tackles including
nine for losses. Oglesby, a senior
from Taccoa, Ga finished with 45 tackles and closed his career with
13 interceptions. Merrit, a
sophomore from Box Springs, Ga. averaged 13.9 yards on punt returns,
and 27.1 yards on kickoff returns this season, while returning four
kicks for touchdowns. He ranks among the NCAA Division II
leaders in both return categories. Blount, a junior from
Pensacola, Fla., finished with 706 yards rushing, 164 receiving
yards and 251 yards on kickoff returns. He scored nine touchdowns
this season, pushing his career total to 49 and breaking UNA's
records for career rushing touchdowns
and career touchdowns scored. Blount received first-team honors in
2003. Farris, a junior from
Jasper, Ala., finished the year with 39 tackles and three
interceptions. Snipes, a senior from Opelika,
Ala., finished the year with 48 total tackles including four for
losses.
