– West Georgia picked off five North Alabama passes and rolled up
517 yards of total offense as the Braves upset the Lions 38-21 at
Braly Municipal Stadium.
West Georgia built a 28-7 lead in the first
half enroute to just its second win of the season. The Braves are no
2-6 overall and 2-5 in the Gulf South Conference, while North
Alabama falls to 5-4 and 4-4.
UNA starting quarterback Chris Gunn was
picked off five times in the contest, while West Georgia played a
turnover free game.
The Lions scored on their opening possession
with Gunn scoring on a five-yard run. Beau Tanner’s PAT made it 7-0
with 6:15 left in the first quarter. The Braves tied the game on the
last play of the opening period on a 21-yard pass from Lucas
McMichen to Jesse Marinko.
In the second quarter, Michael Alexis had a
43-yard touchdown run to make it 14-7 with 9:42 left in the half,
then Odell Willis returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown
to make it 217 with 8:40 left.
McMichen hit Corey Brittain with a 35-yard TD
pass to extend it to 28-7 with 5:19 left in the half.
A 34-yard Trevor Ramos field goal made it
31-7 at the 38 second mark of the third quarter and a five-yard
Javari Taylor TD run made it 38-7 with 12:33 remaining in the game.
UNA mounted two late scoring drives with
Randy Vickers scoring on a 15-yard run and Hansell Bearden scoring
on a one-yard run.
Alexis rushed for 184 yards for West Georgia
on 31 carries. McMichen was 20-of-34 for 275 yards. UNA’s Vickers
rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries.
The Lions close out their regular season next
Saturday at West Alabama.
