Alton Romine was a three-year letterman in football from 1951-53 and a four-year basketball letterman from 1952-55. He led the Lions in rushing in 1953 with 529 yards on 111 attempts for a 4.8 average and still ranked seventh on UNA's all-time career rushing touchdown list with 19 at the time of his induction. His top single game performance was 203 yards against Conway State in 1951. The Lions had a combined 20-5-1 record during his three years and he was named the team's Most Valuable Back in1953.

He was named to the 50th Anniversary UNA Football Team for 1949-98.Following his collegiate career he signed a National Football League contract with the Chicago Bears and later played for the Green Bay Packers from 1955-58. At Green Bay he was teammate of Hall of Famers like Paul Hornug and Bart Starr and played defensive half back and offensive end. In 1960 he played in the American Football League for the Denver Broncos, and in 1961 he played with the Boston Patriots. He also played three years in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts (1956), Waterloo Dutchmen (1957) and Ottawa Rough Riders (1959).

Following his professional football career, he coached at Phillips High School in Bear Creek, Ala., and at Phil Campbell High School. After seven years at Phil Campbell, he returned to Phillips and coached there until his retirement.
