Smith,
a native of Huntsville, Ala., was a four-year letterman
for the Lions from 1979-82 and was a three-year starter on the
offensive line. He was selected NCAA Division II
All-American as a senior in 1982, earning first-team Kodak
All-American and second-team Associated Press All-American. He
was also selected All-Gulf South Conference.
He was later
selected for the Gulf South Conference Football Team of the
Quarter Century (1971-95), the Gulf South Conference Team of the
Decade for the 1980s , the "First Forty Years"
All-Time UNA Football Team and the UNA 50th Anniversary Football
Team. Smith played all three offensive line positions
during his career and was also the long-snapper.
He started and
was a key force on UNA's first Gulf South Conference football
championship team in 1980 that went 10-2. That team also became
the Lions' first football team to advance to the NCAA playoffs.
Smith played on UNA teams with a combined 31-12 record. He
Graduated from UNA in 1983.
