Fletcher,
a Moulton, Ala., native, was a four-year letterman in football
at UNA from 1978-81 and was a three-year starter. During
his career he broke UNA's records for the most career carries
(490), most yards gained in a career (2,432), most
touchdowns in a season (14) and most points scored in a season
(86).
He was an offensive force on UNA's first Gulf South
Conference football championship team in 1980 that went 10-2.
That squad also became the Lions' first football team to advance
to the NCAA playoffs. In 1979 he was first-team
All-Gulf South Conference and was twice selected GSC Player of
the Week.
He also ranked fourth in the GSC in receiving and
fifth in total offense. In 1980 he was also selected
first-team All-GSC after leading the GSC in scoring and
ranking second in rushing. He ranked fourth in the
GSC in rushing as a senior.
Fletcher had seven career
100-plus yard rushing games and was UNA's leading rusher for
three consecutive years. His top single game was a 208-yard
performance against Middle Tennessee State in 1979. He was named
to the "First Forty Years" UNA Football Team and the
UNA Team of the Decade for 1979-88.
