MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM RELEASES 2008-09 SCHEDULE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men’s basketball team will have 13 home dates during the
2008-09 season, along with road trips to Las Vegas and two SEC schools. UNA head coach Bobby Champagne has released this season’s upcoming slate, featuring 27 regular-season contests and two exhibition games.

Coming off a 27-9 campaign with a South Region championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, UNA has again loaded the non-conference portion of its schedule with quality opponents.

The Lions will face two Division I opponents in exhibition games before opening the regular season at the Montevallo Tip-Off Classic.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- After posting a 27-9 record in 2007-08 that included a berth in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team also took a prominent position in the final NCAA statistics released Tuesday.

FLORENCE -- University of North Alabama senior forward Casey Holt of Culleoka, Tenn., has been named honorable mention All-American by the Division II Bulletin. Holt has previously been honored as first-team All-Gulf South Conference, GSC East Division Player of the Year, three-time GSC Player of the Week, first-team Daktronics All-South Region, first-team NABC All-South Region and to the All-South Region Tournament team.

Springfield, Mass. - On their second day in Springfield, Mass., for the Elite Eight, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team visited the Morgan Square Nursery School at Faith Church, toured ESPN's Bristol, Conn., headquarters with former UNA soccer player and current ESPN employee Alison Woodman, went through a 55-minute practice session at the Mass Mutual Center, attended a press conference and closed the day with a banquet at the Basketball Hall of Fame.

UNA, 23-7 overall, debuted in the poll at No. 23 and moved up four spots last week. The Lions are riding an eight-game winning streak entering Friday's quarterfinal round in the Gulf South Conference Basketball Tournament.

FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama men's basketball team jumped two spots to No. 1 in this week's NCAA Division II Men's Basketball South Region rankings.  UNA (21-7) moved past previous No. 1 Tampa and No. 2 Florida Southern.  Four other GSC teams also made the Top 10, led by Harding which climbed one spot to No. 7.  The GSC rounded out the final three spots with Alabama-Huntsville dropping to No. 8, while Ouachita Baptist jumped one spot to No. 9 and Christian Brothers made its first appearance of the season at No. 10.

  FLORENCE – Arkansas Tech’s Darren Tarver and Terrance Whiters combined for 54 points as the Wonderboys handed North Alabama its first home loss in a 100-90 setback Saturday evening at Flowers Hall. The Lions held a slim 40-39 lead at the break, but ATU used a 10-0 run to start the second half and never trailed again.

  FLORENCE – The North Alabama men’s basketball team got its highest offensive production in 14 seasons, in a 122-89 win over Blue Mountain College Tuesday evening at home.  In a sloppy game that featured a combined 211 points, 54 personal fouls, 40 turnovers and 68 free throw attempts, the Lions improved to 4-2 on the year with a 3-0 mark at Flowers Hall. Casey Holt led four UNA players in double digits with 30 points on the night.

  LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla  –  The University of North Alabama men's basketball team got its first win of the season Sunday, defeating Philadelphia University  90-62, in the 2007 Disney’s Division II Men’s Tip Off Classic at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.  Quinn Beckwith scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half to lead four North Alabama (1-2) players in double figures.  Beckwith, who was named to the All-Tournament Team for Group Teamwork, shot 8-of-16 from the floor, including 6-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc.

  SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- University of North Alabama senior Esmir Guzonjic scored 11 points and pulled seven rebounds recently in the 2nd annual National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All- Star Game. Guzonjic, a 6-foor-10 senior from Sarajevo, Bosnia, was one of 10 players selected for the East squad in the game that is now part of the Elite Eight Tournament each March.

  FLORENCE – North Alabama guard Milton Nance has added another post-season award to his collection after receiving second-team honors on the Daktronics All-South Region team.  The regional award, which was voted on my sports information directors in the Gulf South Conference, Sunshine State Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, is the second post-season honor for Nance.   VALDOSTA, Ga., – North Alabama shot just 25.9 percent from the field in the second half as Valdosta State rallied from a 15-point half-time deficit to post a 73-65 victory over the Lions Monday evening in Gulf South Conference men’s basketball action.
  GUZONJIC LEADS LIONS TO 85-78 GSC WIN
  PENSACOLA, Fla., – Esmir Guzonjic was a perfect 13-of-13 from the field, scoring 26 points and leading the University of North Alabama’s men’s basketball team to an 85-78 road victory over West Florida Saturday evening in Gulf South Conference action.

  FLORENCE – Four players reached double digits in scoring as the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team picked up a big win in Gulf South Conference play with an 89-60 rout over West Florida Monday evening at Flowers Hall.
  LIONS END VALDOSTA STATE WINNING STREAK
  FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama Lions defense held Valdosta State 20 points below its season scoring average and helped UNA end the Blazers' nine-game winning streak with a 77-63 win at Flowers Hall.  The Gulf South Conference win gives UNA a 9-9 overall mark and a 2-1 league record.
  WEST ALABAMA HANDS LIONS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS
  LIVINGSTON – West Alabama’s Stan Gill scored 31 points to lead the Tigers to a 79-69 home victory over North Alabama Monday evening in Gulf South Conference men’s basketball action.  UNA, which trailed 40-31 at the half, suffered 17 turnovers and went just 4-of-20 from three-point range. The Tigers, however, were unable to put the game away until the final minute. A three-pointer by Joemal Campbell pulled the Lions to within five points at 74-69 with 23 seconds remaining. UWA scored the final five points to secure the win.
  LIONS OPEN GSC PLAY WITH 101-94 WIN AT MONTEVALLO
 

MONTEVALLO – Three players scored more than 20 points each as the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 101-94 road win against Montevallo Saturday evening.

FLORENCE -- North Alabama made nine three-point baskets and Ouachita Baptist was 0-for-13 from behind the line in the second half as the Lions downed the Tigers 78-64 at Flowers Hall.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Christian Brothers shot 67 percent from the floor and hit 12 three- pointers to drop North Alabama in a high-scoring shootout 107-94.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark., – Kenny Johnson’s jumper with 10 seconds remaining gave the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team a 79-78 road victory over Arkansas Tech Monday evening, snapping the Lions five-game losing streak.

  HARDING RALLIES TO SINK LIONS IN OVERTIME
 

SEARCY, Ark., – Harding was able to overcome a 10-point second-half deficit to force overtime, and eventually defeat the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team 103-96 Saturday evening at the Rhodes Field House on the HU campus.

  UNA DROPS 90-84 DECISION AT DELTA STATE
 

CLEVELAND, Miss., – Despite a career-high 32 points from Quinn Beckwith, the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team was unable to get past homestanding Delta State Wednesday evening at Walter Sillers Coliseum on the DSU campus.

  EIGHTH RANKED LAKERS HOLD OFF LIONS
 

FLORENCE – Clayton State built a 14-point lead in the second half and held off a late North Alabama rally to claim an 80-74 victory over the Lions Monday evening at Flowers Hall. The win kept the eighth-ranked Lakers unbeaten on the season at 2-0, while UNA dropped its third straight decision to fall to 2-3 on the year.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., – Barry’s Ryan Saunders drove the length of the floor and laid in the game-winning basket with two seconds remaining to give the Buccaneers a 71-69 victory over North Alabama Saturday evening at the NSU Thanksgiving Classic.

  NOVA HANDS UNA FIRST LOSS WITH 108-107 SETBACK
 

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., – After two free throws by Rhys Martin gave Nova Southeastern a 108-104 lead with just five seconds remaining, Thomas Morris could only watch as his buzzer-beating three-pointer made the final score 108-107, giving the University of North Alabama men’s basketball team its first loss of the season Friday evening.

FLORENCE – An almost six minute scoring drought to open the game doomed Southern Arkansas Tuesday as North Alabama raced to a 13-0 lead and held on for a 94-70 win over the Muleriders at Flowers Hall.

  OXFORD, Miss. – Five North Alabama players scored in double figures as the Lions scored 103 points but it wasn't enough as UNA dropped a 108-103 men's basketball exhibition game at Ole Miss.
  UNA BASKETBALL SEASON ENDS WITH NCAA TOURNAMENT LOSS
 

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Arkansas-Monticello staked itself to a lead in the second half and poor free throw shooting plagued North Alabama in the second half as the Lions basketball season came to a end with an 90-81 loss to the Boll Weevils in the first round of the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament at Walter Sillers Coliseum.  UNA finishes its season at 18-11.
