MONTEVALLO
– Three players scored more than 20 points
each as the University of North Alabama
men’s basketball team opened Gulf South
Conference play with a 101-94 road win
against Montevallo Saturday evening.
Milton Nance led all scorers with 29 points,
while Esmir Guzonjic added 26 and Joemal
Campbell 22 for the Lions. Nance did most of
his damage from three-point range, hitting
5-of-9 shots on the night. The senior from
Killen also went 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Guzonjic also pulled down 11 rebounds to
record a double-double for the game.
The Lions led 45-42 at the end of the first
half, which featured 10 ties. Campell’s 16
points helped UNA take the three-point lead
into the locker room.
In the second
half, Montevallo scored the first six points
to take a 48-45 lead. The Falcons extended
their lead to six at 63-57 at the 12:52
mark. UNA, however, responded with an 11-4
run to go ahead 68-67 with 11:02 remaining.
Neither team led by more than five points
from that point until a three-pointer by
Nance with just 28 seconds remaining put the
Lions on top 95-89. UNA hit six straight
free throws down the stretch to seal the
win.
The win improves the Lions’ overall record
to 8-8 with a 1-0 showing in GSC play.
Montevallo falls to 9-5, 0-1.
UNA will travel to Livingston, Ala., for its
next GSC match-up on Monday. The Lions will
take on West Alabama at 8 p.m.
