-- The University of North Alabama Lions
defense held Valdosta State 20 points below
its season scoring average and helped UNA
end the Blazers' nine-game winning streak
with a 77-63 win at Flowers Hall.
The Gulf South
Conference win gives UNA a 9-9 overall mark
and a 2-1 league record. The Blazers
are now 12-4 overall and 1-1 in the GSC.
It was UNA's first win over the Blazers
since 2005 and evened the all-time series
record at 26-26.
UNA built an impressive 13-point lead at
halftime by holding the Blazers to just 27
percent shooting. VSU tried to cut into
UNA's 39-26 lead early in the second half
and closed to within eight at one point but
three point baskets by Quinn Beckwith,
Joemal Campbell and Kenny Johnson held
extend the lead back into double-figures.
The Lions also
hit 17 of 21 free throws, most of which were
down the stretch in a must-foul situation,
to help protect the lead.
Esmir Guzonjic and Jerrell Vinson both had
double-doubles, with Guzonjic recording 18
points and 11 rebounds and Vinson totalling
10 points and 13 rebounds. Milton Nance led
UNA with 17 points and Johnson added 12.
Herman Burge
led VSU with 16 points and Mike Crain had
11. The Lions host West Florida on
Monday night at Flowers Hall.
