FLORENCE -- The University of North Alabama Lions defense held Valdosta State 20 points below its season scoring average and helped UNA end the Blazers' nine-game winning streak with a 77-63 win at Flowers Hall.

The Gulf South Conference win gives UNA a 9-9 overall mark and a 2-1 league record.  The Blazers are now 12-4 overall and 1-1 in the GSC.  It was UNA's first win over the Blazers since 2005 and evened the all-time series record at 26-26.
UNA built an impressive 13-point lead at halftime by holding the Blazers to just 27 percent shooting. VSU tried to cut into UNA's 39-26 lead early in the second half and closed to within eight at one point but three point baskets by Quinn Beckwith, Joemal Campbell and Kenny Johnson held extend the lead back into double-figures.

The Lions also hit 17 of 21 free throws, most of which were down the stretch in a must-foul situation, to help protect the lead.
Esmir Guzonjic and Jerrell Vinson both had double-doubles, with Guzonjic recording 18 points and 11 rebounds and Vinson totalling 10 points and 13 rebounds. Milton Nance led UNA with 17 points and Johnson added 12.

Herman Burge led VSU with 16 points and Mike Crain had 11.  The Lions host West Florida on Monday night at Flowers Hall.
